Our club recently received approval from TRF for a Global Grant for more than $460,000 to provide needed textbooks, computer centers, and primary school teacher training and educational supplies for villages in rural Guatemala.. Our club is the International Partner and the Rotary Club of Del Valle Guatemala is the host club. This project is part of the Guatemala Literacy Project, a partnership between Rotary Clubs and the Cooperative for Education which is now celebrating its 20th year. The link for this project is guatemalaliteracy.org if you would like to learn more about the work that we do. The next Global Grant is already under development and we are looking for partners now. GG1642745. We plan to close the grant on January 1. That is a firm deadline so we really do need clubs to commit now so we can get all the paperwork in on time.
One of the highlights of this project is the project tour. Representatives from clubs from across the US and Canada as well as the UK and Cayman Islands travel together to visit the schools and deliver the textbooks personally to the students. It is also an opportunity to meet with local Rotarians and to spend time with the scholarship students. The tour this year is planned for February 3-12. I will be going and welcome other participants as well. This year our club will be sponsoring a computer center at one of the schools. Mary Pribyl and her spouse also sponsor one of our scholarship students and I am looking forward to spending time with her, as well. Did you know that rural children in Guatemala often cannot progress to the sixth grade without a scholarship?
Please contact Mary Priybl, International Service Chair, at email@example.com for further information.
If any of the clubs in the district would like a program presentation, contact Mary Pribyl at and she would be happy to arrange for one.
